Dear Reader,
Is Michael Moore a genius, a troublemaker, a whistleblower,
a crazed man, a brilliant filmmaker or all of the above? The
opinions about Moore may vary but the premise of "Sicko" is
considered universally legit: The American health care
system is critically ill.
Although there are 50 million Americans without health
insurance, Moore's film focuses primarily on the millions of
people who dutifully pay their insurance premium each and
every month, and when it comes time to draw upon the
reserve, find themselves ensnarled in red tape. Moore takes
aim at the insurance companies, health maintenance
organizations and legislators who he believes are often
"bought off" by big pharmaceutical companies and HMOs. He
calls private medical insurance a "disaster" and contends
that a state-run system, such as exists nearly everywhere
else in the industrialized world, would be better. Profit,
he argues, should never enter into the equation where a
person's health is concerned.
As part of his research Moore reviewed thousands of health
care nightmare stories, some of which he includes in the
film. He offers several heart-wrenching examples of people
who were jilted (sometimes fatally) by their health
insurance companies.
For example:
* A woman watches her husband slowly waste away with
kidney cancer in a hospital bed because the couple's
insurance company refused to pay for experimental treatments
that might have saved his life.
* A woman is denied emergency care because her car
accident had not been "pre-certified" by her insurance
company.
* A man looses two fingers in a chainsaw accident but
can only afford to have one of them reattached.
Moore contends that the job of the insurance companies is to
deny claims, whether they admit it or not. In "Sicko" he
interviews former insurance company employees who describe
quotas for claims denials and bonuses for anything above
quota. He talks to a doctor whose signature is stamped on a
series of denials to a woman suffering from a brain tumor.
It turns out the signatures are stamped without the doctor
ever reading the claims.
To illustrate the point that health care delivery is
different in other civilized nations, Moore visits England,
Canada and France, all of whom have government-run health
care systems. He presents an idyllic vision of the quality
of that care. (He even treks to Cuba at one point in the
film to seek help for uninsured 9/11 workers.)
The film has come under fire from medical professionals and
public officials who question the validity of his
statistical information. Dr. Sonjay Gupta of CNN put it this
way: "Michael has a lot of different numbers. He's sort of
cherry picking with different reports." At the same time,
Dr. Gupta believes that overall it is a good movie. "I think
it strikes at the irrefutable fact that our health system is
badly broken."
The leaders of both political parties will readily admit
that our health care system is critically ill. The argument
that this movie inspires will be primarily about the nature
of the cure, and that is where Moore's film is most useful.
He has a unique ability to preach without sounding
"preachy."
So what can you do to avoid health care delivery nightmares?
Eat your vegetables. Get plenty of rest and exercise and say
your prayers. Do anything you can to avoid getting sick.
With or without insurance, you can't afford it.
Yours in good health,

Sheila McCormick

Dear Reader,
Our pets love summer fun as much as we do.
However, hot weather can create serious health hazards for our beloved
pets. With a little planning and information, you can make this a fun,
safe season for your four-legged friends. Bear in mind that dogs are
not good at keeping themselves cool and they want to go everywhere you
do, even if it's too hot. It is up to you to use good judgment to
protect your pet.
Jogging is particularly dangerous in hot weather even if your dog is in
good health. As the weather warms, humans alter the type and amount of
clothing worn and we sweat. Dogs are still jogging in their winter coat
and can only cool themselves by panting. Many dogs will keep running,
no matter what, to stay up with their owner.
Plan exercise and outdoor activities for the morning and evening. Even
in the cooler part of the day, watch for signs of trouble. In summer
heat your pet can suffer from heat exhaustion and heat stroke. These
conditions are very serious and could cause your pet to die. You should
be aware of the signs of heat stress, which could include heavy
panting, glazed eyes, a rapid pulse, unsteadiness, a staggering gait,
vomiting, or a deep red or purple tongue. Bear in mind that older,
obese and short-nosed dogs are less heat-tolerant and all dogs need
constant access to shade and plenty of cool clean water.
If your pet does become overheated, you need to immediately lower his
body temperature. Move your pet into the shade and apply cool (not
cold) water over his body to gradually lower his core body temperature.
Apply cold towels or ice packs to your pet's head, neck, and chest
only. Let your pet drink small amounts of water or lick ice cubes.
Never leave your pet in a car in hot weather, even if it is only for a
"quick errand." Cars heat up fast, even when the windows are cracked.
Pets can get sunburned too, and your pet may require sunscreen on his
or her nose and ear tips. Pets with light-colored noses or
light-colored fur on their ears are particularly vulnerable to sunburn
and skin cancer.
Ticks are another summer hazard for pets. Do not remove them with your
hands. Remove them with tweezers or a tick remover and apply strong
steady pressure. Dispose of the tick without touching it and keep an
eye on the spot for a few days to make sure no infection develops.
Heartworms can be transmitted by mosquitoes. Once in a new host, the
heartworm larvae make their way to the heart, where they can grow to be
nine to 14 inches long, blocking the flow of blood and causing severe
damage and possibly death. By the time the symptoms are noticed, a
great deal of damage has usually been done, not only to the heart but
also to other organs such as the kidneys, which rely on a steady flow
of blood to operate. Talk to your holistic practitioner about natural
ways to prevent heartworms.
Because of their keen sense of hearing, many dogs are absolutely
terrified by fireworks. If your holiday plans include fireworks, be
considerate of your dog's needs. Make sure pets are secure when the
noise begins, because scared pets are more likely to escape the house
or yard. Many pet lovers believe the homeopathic product called Rescue
Remedy helps to calm a nervous pet. This remedy is available at health
food stores.
The lazy hazy days of summer are so much more fun when we share them
with our pets. Here's to a happy, safe season for you and your
four-legged friends!
Yours in good health,

Sheila McCormick

How Can the Rooster Help Men and Women Keep Their Joints & Muscles Free of Pain?
100
million Americans suffer from chronic pain. Back pain, neck pain, knee
pain, foot pain - you name it, we've got pain, all day, every day. In
fact, joint and muscle pain cause more disability and missed work days
than cancer and heart disease combined.
As we age, our joints and muscles lose Hyaluronic Acid (HA) and HA is
the critical lubricant for your healthy joints, skin and eyes. This
joint dryness is the principal reason why your cartilage - the shock
absorber between your joints - becomes malnourished and starved, and
why it starts to break down and disintegrate, causing terrible pain
with each step.
HA is extracted from Rooster Comb and it's the best source for
providing your body with a low molecular weight source of HA, which
means higher absorption. HA is odorless, neutral in color,
water-soluble and classified as a food. It is 100% natural and has
shown to be effective in maintaining skin elasticity, joint flexibility
and sharp vision among adults.

Dear Reader,
The epidemic of childhood obesity in this country
is spiraling out of control at an alarming rate. During the past two
decades, the number of overweight children in this country has more
than doubled. More than 30% of children between the ages of six and 19
are overweight and 16% are clinically obese.
The effects of childhood obesity can have repercussions that last into
adulthood. Some of the effects are high cholesterol and high blood
pressure. Type II Diabetes, which was previously thought to be an adult
disease, is now showing up in teens. Overweight children have increased
chances of developing orthopedic problems because bone and cartilage in
the process of development can't bear the excess weight. Increased
weight on the growth plate of the hip can cause pain and limit range of
motion.
Aside from the chronic health problems associated with being
overweight, obese children are also more likely to be injured in a
vehicle accident because it is difficult to find child safety seats to
accommodate them. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration, manufacturers have been encouraged to design child
safety seats for higher weights.
Obese children often suffer from low self-esteem and develop social
skills at slower pace due to lower levels of socialization and
interaction. In extreme conditions these develop into severe life
threatening conditions such as anorexia and bulimia.
So why is the childhood obesity epidemic spiraling out of control? One
of the biggest factors is lack of physical activity. Many children
today are allowed to sit in front of computers and TV screens instead
of going outside to play ball, ride bikes or go swimming. One third of
all high school students report that they never participate in a
vigorous activity.
Another contributing factor is our "convenience culture" where working
parents find it much easier to drive through a fast food provider than
to cook a meal at home. Sugary temptations are all around us and they
are easily obtained. Soft drinks play a major role in childhood obesity
to the point that many school systems throughout the country have
banned soft drink vending machines.
Children who are raised in families with obese parents are more likely
to be overweight. If one parent is overweight, their teen has an 80%
chance of being overweight. This is probably a combination of genetics
and family behaviors.
So what can we do? First of all, set a good example. Children emulate
what they see. If they see their parents engaging in good exercise and
nutritional habits, they will model those behaviors.
Following are some tips on how to help an overweight child:
* Never put your child on a low-calorie deprivation diet. You can
lower dietary fat, but maintain calories by increasing the consumption
of fruit, vegetables, cereals, and breads.
* Use vitamin supplements to ensure proper nutrition.
* Children who eat full meals do better nutritionally than children who
merely snack. Your child should come to the table hungry, learn how to
control hunger, and wait for his meal to be served.
* Remove snack temptations around the house.
* Don't use desserts and sweets as rewards.
* Have family meals, and set a good example by eating a wide variety of foods.
* Make mealtime pleasant. Don't use this time for criticizing and scolding.
Don't let your child become part of this heartbreaking epidemic. Making
changes can be challenging, especially when families juggle busy
schedules and time constraints. But if your family works together and
supports each other's efforts, success is more likely. Eventually the
changes will be incorporated and healthy habits become routine.
Yours in good health,

Sugars That Heal and Make You Stronger - Can it Be True?
The Greek word "glyco" means "sweet" so glyconutrient means "sweet nutrient" or a dietary nutrient composed of sugar.
Recent nutritional research has shown that 8 sugars (also called
monosaccharides or glyconutrients) - 6 of which are no longer readily
found in the modern diet - are now regarded as the Masters of
Multicellular Intelligence.
These sugars coat the surface of virtually every cell in the body and
help your 70 trillion cells communicate with one another for optimal
health.
Think of these essential sugars as the communication experts for your
entire immune system - a system that's designed to fight off and
destroy germs, viruses or infections;
it knows when to fight, when to strengthen and fortify, and when to help regulate.

Good Caffeine? You Bet!
Green
tea is unique: it's made from pure, unfermented leaves that are
harvested at their peak perfection and then stabilized through exposure
to both humid and dry heat - giving green tea the highest concentration
of polyphenols and locking in the tannins.
Tannins ensure that caffeine is taken to the brain in only small
amounts so it can be easily used. This helps green tea drinkers improve
their vitality and stamina without the up-and-down effect of black tea.
Tannins inhibit the oxidation of your body's DNA material, a leading cause of cell destruction and mutation.
Green tea tannins help clear urinary tract infections, stimulate
digestion, reduce unwanted body fat, increase hair growth and support
saliva secretion to keep teeth free of plaque.
Pretty amazing, don't you agree?

Dear Reader,
Flax seed is the richest plant form of omega-3 fatty acids,
which have been linked to reducing the risk of cancer. It is
a grain much like oat and wheat, however, its nutritional
value is far superior and it is also high in fiber. Most of
the flax seed that you'll find on the market is grown in
Canada and although a lot of people don't know much about
it, it is considered one of the original "health" foods.
Flax Seed has been used as a healing "medicine" dating back
to as early as the Roman Empire.
If flax seed is so good, how come everyone doesn't know
about it? Although studies have shown the benefits of
incorporating flax seed into our daily diet, the shelf life
of flax seed isn't long. Once a container of flax seed oil
or flax seed meal is opened it must be kept in a
refrigerator to keep it from going rancid. Because of this,
many people choose to buy flax seed oil in capsules to take
as a supplement or, alternatively, buy the flax seeds they
can then grind themselves in a coffee and spice mill.
Grinding only as much as you need will keep the flax seed
fresh longer and avoid spoilage.
Benefits of Flax Seed
Many studies have been conducted on flax seed to define the
health benefits. A Duke University study showed that flax
seed was effective in reducing the size and aggressiveness
of tumors in mice that had developed prostate cancer by
genetically engineered means. As many as 3 percent of the
mice did not get the cancer at all while taking the flax
seed diet.
Many women suffer serious menopausal symptoms as the body
experiences hormonal swings. Taking hormones to offset the
side effects of menopause is either not desirable or not an
option for some women. Flax seed contains phytoestrogens,
which is a natural plant based estrogen that helps to keep a
woman's hormones in balance as she goes through the change.
This offers hope of a more natural way to get through
menopause.
Flax seed is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, shown to help
lower the risk of heart attacks by providing a lubricant for
the arteries. It also helps to reduce cholesterol levels and
high blood pressure.
Benefits of a flax seed rich diet are:
* Helps promote cardiovascular health
* High source of fiber and acts as a natural lubricant
to the intestines
* Helps to reduce constipation
* Improves immunity to help reduce colds and flu
* Provides important fats that build brain function in
babies when mothers take it during pregnancy and while
nursing
* Helps to stabilize blood sugar
* Helps promote healthy skin and aids in clearing acne,
eczema and
psoriasis
* Because flax seed is high in fiber and has zero carbs,
it can actually
aid in weight loss when used in foods
* Helps decrease inflammation and may be beneficial to
people with
rheumatoid arthritis
* Flax seed oil contains lignans and phytoestrogens
which help reduce the
symptoms of menopause in some women
* Flax seed oil helps heal the inner lining of the
intestines, and may give
relief to those with Colitis and Chron's disease.
Using Flax Seed
Flax seed is available in several forms. How you use it
depends on personal choice, however, some forms are easier
to use than others.
Since flax seed has a slightly nutty taste, sprinkling the
whole seed on salads, in soups or in muffins will give a
crunchy, nutty flavor. However, whole seeds don't digest the
same way meal or oil does. Whole seeds pass through the
digestive tract, preventing the intestines from absorbing
most of the nutrients.
Flax seed meal can be purchased already ground or you can
grind it yourself. There are many uses for flax seed meal in
cooking. Adding a tablespoon or two to hot or cold cereal or
sprinkling it on salads and soup not only enhances the foods
flavor, but it adds nutritional value. Adding a tablespoon
to yogurt is also a great way to start the day. You can
easily add a quarter cup of flax seed meal to any recipe by
exchanging 1/4 cup of flour for 1/4 cup of flax seed meal.
For people who are lowering their egg intake, you can
replace one egg with 1 tablespoon of flax seed meal and 2
tablespoons of water. Please note that the consistency of
the food might change slightly.
Flax seed oil capsules are also available as a daily
supplement for people who either don't want to add it to
food or don't enjoy the taste of it. It is also available as
an oil substitute in cooking and can easily replace higher
fat oils in salads and baking.
Any way you incorporate flax seed into your daily diet,
you'll gain tremendous health benefits from it. Whether
you're concerned about eating heart healthy foods, are
approaching menopause and want a natural way to alleviate
symptoms or you want to help maintain your overall health,
flax seed can be a great addition to your diet.
Yours in good health,

Sheila McCormick

Work with your body, rather than against it!
We used to think that the human growth
hormone naturally produced by the body was only necessary
until we reached maturity. However, studies now show that
the human growth hormone, or hGH, is vital in virtually all
functions of the body throughout our entire lives, even into
old age!
Sadly, as our bodies mature, the level of hGH decreases
accordingly, leaving us at the mercy of time, increasing our
chances of premature aging, and all the joys that come along
with it: creaking bones, back pain, weight gain, loss of sex
drive, loss of eyesight, and more.
Many people try to continually replace these hormones with
injections that can cost about $1,000 a month, month after
month, after month! Luckily through the research of Dr. L.E.
Dorman, we now know that there is a natural way to stimulate
our own body's release of its own natural hGH! Here's the
good news:

As a Result of Poor, Acid-Based Nutrition...
At least 65 million Americans (1 out of 3
adults over 18) have hypertension - defined as high blood
pressure of 140 over 90 or higher.
The number of people with high blood pressure (including
children and young adults) has skyrocketed by over 30% in
the last decade alone. Why?
You can blame the usual suspects: aging, obesity, lack of
exercise and too much red meat and junk food, but that's not
the whole story as you will see...

When Good Prostates Go Bad
Scientists believe that as a man ages, his levels of
testosterone start to decrease.
When our testosterone levels begin to decline, the levels of
another hormone start to rise. A hormone called estrogen.
All this rising and falling of hormones causes an enzyme
called 5-alpha-reductase to turn what little testosterone
we've got left into something called dihydrotestosterone or
DHT. It's this DHT that causes the prostate to swell.
You may think that prostate trouble is just another lousy
part of growing older... like gray hair or bifocals.
There is hope for your prostate and it doesn't involve
dangerous drugs or risky surgery.

Dear Reader,
Can you imagine anything more heartbreaking than
looking into your mother's eyes and realizing that she doesn't have
clue who you are? How terrible it would be to wake up every day with a
spouse that you adore who can't remember your name or anything about
your 40-year marriage. Five million Americans suffer from Alzheimer's
and their families are all too familiar with the above scenarios.
Alzheimer's disease is the most common from of dementia among older
people. Dementia is a brain disorder that seriously affects a person's
ability to carry out daily activities. The disease typically surfaces
after the age of 60 and the symptoms begin slowly. In its early stages,
Alzheimer's affects the parts of the brain that control thought, memory
and language. They may find that they have trouble remembering things
that happened recently or the names of people they have known for
years.
As the disease progresses, symptoms become significantly worse. People
may not recognize family members or they may have trouble speaking,
reading or writing. They may forget how to brush their teeth or comb
their hair. Later on, they become anxious and aggressive or develop a
tendency to wander away from home. Eventually they need total care.
This causes a tremendous amount of stress for family members who care
for them.
Although definitive causes and treatments for Alzheimer's continue to
elude modern medicine, there have been many studies conducted that hold
out hope for natural ways of preventing and treating the disease. It is
important to remember that the brain is a muscle and it needs exercise
like every other muscle in the body. In fact, one recent study revealed
that a mentally inactive person in old age is three times more likely
to develop Alzheimer's disease than an elderly person who remains
mentally active. Stimulating the brain can increase the number of brain
cells and the connections between the brain cells. Researchers suggest
that elderly people make an effort to engage in challenging activities
that exercise the brain. Some of the suggested activities include:
* Learn to play a musical instrument, learn a foreign language or start a new hobby
* Play memory games to improve or train your memory
* Visit museums, attend lectures or performances, take a class
* Read, especially challenging material
* Join a book discussion group
* Write. If not a book or article, write in a diary, write letters or
emails or start your memoirs
* Do crossword puzzles, sudoku, jigsaw puzzles
* Play board games, card games or other strategy games
* Learn a kind of dance that is new to you, which will also give you some
physical exercise
* Debate or discuss topics with people
* Practice using the opposite hand for something you usually do with your
dominant hand
Active
involvement with family and a wide network of friends is likely to
lower your risk of dementia. Besides stimulating your brain,
socializing lessens depression that can result from isolation.
Regardless of whether you have many friends or few, it's also helpful
to join a civic group, attend classes, continue working or do volunteer
work.
If you have a loved one with
Alzheimer's disease there are many alternative therapies than can be
used to slow the progression of the disease. Counseling, psychotherapy,
music therapy, aromatherapy, acupuncture and acupressure have been
helpful for many people. Other alternatives include herbal remedies and
nutritional supplements, such as ginkgo biloba, coral calcium and omega
3 fatty acids.
Stay active and stay informed. Get out there and flex those cerebral
muscles to strengthen your brain and help protect yourself from this
progressive and heartbreaking disease.
Yours in good health,

Sheila McCormick

Protein Means the Power to Grow and Repair!
Without
daily protein absorption, the growth, repair and maintenance of your
muscles, tendons, hormones, enzymes, antibodies, blood cells, hair,
skin and nails is severely compromised.
Protein means power and if you want to keep your strength and energy as
you age, you need to feed your cells with an adequate protein supply.
Americans are living longer, but you have to ask yourself are you living stronger
with each year?
Sadly, the answer for most men and women is no. Why?
The single biggest reason why people sag and drag with age is malabsorption.
As you age, it gets harder to absorb all the nutrition from the foods you eat.
Malabsorption (which happens to everyone with age) opens the doors to
disease and decline. But that slide can be turned into a climb if you
properly digest and use protein to keep your body intact.
Your digestive system slows down after 40.
Your stomach secretes less acid and this slams the brakes on your
body's ability to extract vital nutrients from food. What's more...

It's
easy to become tired, weak, imbalanced, and dull-witted like there's a
bag of wet wool around your head. You become congested in your lungs,
liver, kidneys, and colon.
But let's face
it, it's hard to eat enough salads and enough fruits to get all the
fuel you need. Hard to get the right mix of proteins, amino acids,
healthy fats, fiber and antioxidants. Harder yet to accomplish this
regimen, day in and day out.
Now with one anti-aging super cocktail, Long Life Food Source(tm),
you'll be able to switch on a secret source of energy and strength
every day for the rest of your life!

We've taken this ancient herb and mixed it into a balanced formula
designed to help you keep 100% of your brainpower.
* Flower extract dilates your vessels, lets more blood flow into your brain
* Herbal extract Vinpocetine improves brain's oxygen use
* Natural Huperzine A protects cells against glucose deprivation
* Super-Nutrient CDP Choline increases brain cell energy

Dear Reader,
You've decided to eat only organic foods and to eliminate red meat from your diet. In the interest
of good health and nutrition, you get up early every Saturday morning and hit the organic market
for the best and freshest foods available. Then you prepare them in your kitchen. Unfortunately,
you may have some uninvited toxic guests in your kitchen who are trying to foil your efforts to
stay healthy.
For example, check out your pots and pans. They may look innocent enough but many are made with
substances that can be harmful. Aluminum pots and pans can react with certain foods to form
aluminum salts that have been associated with Alzheimer's, dementia and impaired vision. Non-stick
finishes contain Teflon. Because they scratch easily, tiny bits of plastic can be released into
food and cause serious health problems over time. The Environmental Protection Agency has asked for
a voluntary ban of PFOA, the chemical used to make Teflon, due to its independent advisory panel's
findings that PFOA is a "likely" carcinogen.
Using an abrasive material to clean stainless steel cookware can release small amounts of toxic
metals. Glass, cast iron, stainless steel that is not cleaned abrasively and terra cotta pots
without a glaze are the best and safest choices. Acidic foods (fruits, tomatoes, foods that contain
vinegar) will absorb the most metal, so minimize their contact when cooking. Use parchment paper
instead of foil. The shiny side of foil contains a plastic which vaporizes when heated and may
contaminate food.
Contrary to popular belief, your microwave oven is not your friend. A study conducted by Swiss food
scientist Dr. Hans Hertel revealed significant negative changes in blood chemistry of subjects
eating microwaved food. A study conducted in Russia by the Journal of Natural Sciences found that
people who ate microwaved food had a higher incidence of stomach and intestinal cancers, digestive
disorders, and lymphatic malfunctions causing degeneration of the immune system.
Cleaning products commonly used in kitchens can also create toxic conditions. Instead of reaching
for chemicals to clean kitchen surfaces try the following safe
alternatives:
* Use baking soda to remove built-up grease on your stovetop. Just sprinkle it on your
stovetop, let it sit for five minutes and then scour the surface. Baking soda can also be used to
deodorize drains and refrigerators. It can be used to clean and polish aluminum, chrome, jewelry,
plastic, porcelain, stainless steel and tin.
* Lemon juice, which contains citric acid, can be used to clean glass and remove stains
from aluminum and porcelain.
* Borax is a naturally occurring mineral that is water-soluble. Use it to boost the
cleaning power of soap or detergents and also to remove stains.
* Cornstarch can be used to clean windows, polish furniture, shampoo carpets and starch
clothes.
* Vinegar contains about five percent acetic acid, which makes it a mild acid. It can be
used to dissolve mineral deposits and grease. It can also be used to polish some metals and it
cleans out the metallic taste in coffee pots. Vinegar is normally used in a solution of
water.
Because Americans spend approximately 90% of their time indoors, it is crucial to make the home
environment as safe as possible. Indoor pollutants have proliferated for years, either because
modern construction manufacturers use hazardous materials or because consumers do not know enough
about the products they buy to make informed choices.
Fortunately, safe, nontoxic alternatives exist for nearly every real need around the home and
searching for them may help consumers distinguish between what they really do need and what may be
"luxuries" that could compromise their families' health.

Failing Eyesight is Not an Inevitable Part of Aging
• Prevent general
oxidation-damage to your vision • Improve your night vision • Improve the microcirculation of retinal tissue • Protect your eyes from harmful sunlight • Keep your eyesight sharp and clear forever!
What are the two biggest culprits behind eye problems? Oddly
enough, sunlight and pollution.
Your eyes (and mine) enjoy almost no protection from the
sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. This bombardment of UV rays
leads to free-radical damage responsible for the vast
majority of vision problems.
Worse yet, because most of us live in or near cities, your
eyes are overexposed to pollution and suffer from more free
radical damage than any other organ in your body. Now for
the really good news.
The latest medical research reveals you can combat and
defeat this constant, ever increasing free radical assault
on your eyes by feeding your body with high powered,
targeted antioxidants.

Dear Reader,
A cool dip in the water is a refreshing treat on a
hot summer day. Unfortunately, for many people the benefits of the
refreshing plunge are dampened (literally) by swimmer's ear. The
scientific name for the condition is otitis externa and it is typically
caused by moisture in the ear from showers, shampooing or swimming.
With frequent immersion, water swells the cells that line the ear
canal. Eventually the cells pull apart far enough for the bacteria that
are normally found on the surface of your ear canal to get underneath
the skin, where the warm environment promotes bacteria growth. If left
untreated, the swelling can spread to the nearby lymph nodes and cause
enough pain that moving your jaw becomes uncomfortable.
The symptoms of swimmers' ear include:
* Itching in the ear
* Feeling of stuffiness or heaviness in the ear
* Sudden or sharp pain in the ear
* A discharge from the ear
* Patches of flaky skin around the opening of the ear
* Muffled hearing
* Noises felt inside the ear, such as a buzzing or humming sound
* Swelling in the ear or lymph nodes in the neck
People with narrow ear canals are especially prone to swimmer's ear
because water can't drain effectively. Children who suffer from eczema
have an increased risk of contracting swimmer's' ear.
Most cases of swimmer's ear can be safely and effectively treated with
natural home remedies. Mild swimmer's' ear can treated with a few drops
of white vinegar placed in both ears. Put a few drops of vinegar in one
ear and leave it in the ear canal for about five minutes and then
drain. Because this remedy is acidic, it is very effective against
fungal or bacterial infections. You can also heat baby oil and place it
gently in the ear with a dropper. Put in a cotton ball to keep the oil
from draining.
As with most conditions, the best way to deal with swimmers' ear is to
prevent it from happening in the first place. The goal after engaging
in water activities is to dry the external ear. This can be done in a
variety of ways. It is not advisable to use a cotton-tipped applicator
as that can push the water deeper into the ear canal. Using a twisted
tissue to dry up the water or using a hair dryer can help remove the
moisture from the ear. There are some devices on the market called "ear
dryers" which were designed specifically for this purpose. An ear dryer
looks similar to an ear thermometer and it contains a fan that sends
warm, soothing air into the ear canal to dry any trapped water. An ear
dryer runs on batteries and ideally comes with several ear pieces so
that it can be used by multiple people in a family without the risk of
spreading germs or bacteria. The best ear dryers are able to closely
match your body temperature in order to provide the most comfortable
experience.
People who swim frequently, especially divers, put an acidic solution
in their ear at the beginning and end of each day. The solution must
remain in the ear a full five minutes to be effective. People who are
frequently in the water and who have recurrent problems with swimmer's
ear often wear earplugs.
Swimming is an excellent source of exercise because it works many
muscles in the body without putting undue strain on the joints. It's
also fun! A few simple steps to protect your ears are all you need to
keep your summer plunges healthy and refreshing.
Yours in good health,

You Need Protein to Grow and Heal!
You
need protein every day, but... what kind of protein, that's the
question. Protein is essential for muscle growth, brain function and
energy. Without it, you'll drag, droop and drop before your time.
You need protein for the manufacture of hormones, antibodies, enzymes
and tissue repair. And maybe most importantly, protein helps your body
maintain the proper acid/alkaline balance in the body.
I spent over two years testing and tasting other people's protein
powders and I discovered three things that turned me off big time...
* Turn off #1 All of them tasted bad!
* Turn off #2 All of them were impossible to dissolve!
* Turn off #3 All of the soy products were high in fat, carbs and sodium.
So, I set out to make a super high-energy protein drink...

Remarkable New Super Antioxidant Discovered.
What's
the discovery? It's an amazingly useful and rejuvenating antioxidant
that longevity researchers believe boosts the immune system to help
ward off those threats to your health that you face as you grow older.
And if all that weren't enough, this antioxidant has also been shown to
help protect against eye problems... relieve the aches and pains of old
age... even restore strength and energy.
This new antioxidant is called "astaxanthin" (pronounced asta-ZAN-thin).
Now, I know what you might be thinking. You think you know all about
antioxidants. In fact, you're taking one or two now. And you figure one
is as good as another. But, astaxanthin is no ordinary antioxidant. Far
from it.
Just Imagine...

It's Estimated That By the Year 2010, Some 40% of Americans 65 and Older Will Have Diabetes.
Despite
regular reports in the national press about the near epidemic level of
diabetes, people persist in thinking about diabetes as simply blood
sugar levels that are a little high or low. No big deal! Wrong!
First and foremost, diabetes is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Why?
Because when you have rapidly rising and falling glucose levels, those extremes "destabilize" your heart.
The excess insulin produced by the pancreas to respond to the glucose
spikes causes high blood pressure problems, which further taxes the
heart with oxidative stress. Which is why...
