Dear Reader,

How’d you sleep last night? Insomnia is an epidemic in our country, with more than 80 million Americans suffering from some form of sleep disorder, either temporary or chronic. The inability to get a good night’s sleep is not something to be taken lightly. Insomnia has been linked to major disasters like plane crashes, traffic fatalities and serious work related injuries. According to The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 100,000 serious automobile accidents a year are caused by driver fatigue.

People with insomnia have impaired mental functioning and may experience difficulty concentrating and short-term memory loss. In recent studies conducted by the National Sleep Foundation, sleep deprivation was closely linked to obesity.

Insomnia is also linked to stress and depression because sleep deprivation increases the activity of hormones and pathways in the brain that cause stress and depression. Changes in sleeping patterns have significant effects on mood.

It’s not the one or two nights of lost sleep that can cause problems, it’s chronic poor sleep or unrefreshed sleep night after night that’s hazardous to your health.

Here are a few things that might help you to get a good night’s sleep.

1. Get more exercise. 2. Cut back or eliminate your use of caffeine and sugar – especially in the afternoon and evening. 3. Eat a lighter meal for dinner.

Many people prefer to try natural remedies to treat their insomnia before resorting to prescription medications. Prescription medications may be habit-forming and have unpleasant side effects such as memory loss or next-day drowsiness.

We all know that sleep is needed to restore the energy of the body, but it’s also necessary to revitalize the mind and rejuvenate the spirit. By getting a good night’s sleep every night, you will reap a treasure trove of health benefits.

Yours in good health,

The straightest path to lifelong health is simple: Digest, Absorb, Eliminate, Renew!

Each day you depend upon your digestive tract to feed and nourish every single cell and organ in your body. A significant amount of your immune system depends on the health of your digestive tract. Your GI tract is your first line of immune defense.

Here's a little known fact that'll pay you big health dividends:

70% of your immune system resides in your digestive tract.

The reality is that keeping your digestive system healthy, keeps you robust and healthy. And if your digestive system is weak and unpredictable, you suffer the effects and have poor resistance to disease. Sadly, Americans have the highest incidence of colorectal disease in the world. Dear Reader,

In June of 2006, the Centers for Disease Control recommended that the first vaccine developed to prevent cervical cancer and other diseases caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) be approved for public use. The vaccine, called Gardisil, is said to provide protection against four HPV types which together cause 70 percent of cervical cancer and 90% of genital warts. The Food and Drug Administration recently licensed the vaccine for use in girls and women from nine to 29 years of age.

The fact that there is a vaccine available to prevent cervical cancer should come as good news. Unfortunately, some politicians have taken it upon themselves to make this vaccine mandatory for young girls and women. It is one thing for parents to make a decision regarding their daughter’s sexual health, but to have a governmental mandate is quite another.

As a result, many politicians (most notably Gov. Perry of Texas) have found themselves in hot political waters. Gov. Perry recently issued an executive order mandating that all girls in his state that are 11 and 12 years old be given multiple doses of the Gardisil vaccine. This executive order makes Texas the first state in the nation to mandate the vaccine even though Merck, the manufacturer of the vaccine, is still conducting trials on the drug.

Senator Glenn Hegar of Texas recently announced his intent to file legislation to reverse Gov. Perry’s executive order. Hegar said that the Governor “bypassed the legislature” and that the mandate takes away parental rights to make medical decisions for their children. “This vaccine should be made available for those who want it for their daughters, but it should not be forced upon those who don’t,” said Hegar.

Meanwhile, the American Academy of Pediatrics is urging a “slow-go” approach, with an initial focus on raising public awareness of HPV and more monitoring of the safety of the vaccine which hasn’t been observed in larger scale rollouts. “A lot of us are worried it’s a little too early to be pushing a mandated HPV vaccine,” said Dr. Martin Meyers, director for the National Network for Immunization Information.

The slow-go approach seems particularly appropriate when you consider the fact that the long term effects of the virus are still not known. There are several viruses that cause cervical cancer that can’t be prevented by the vaccine. There are about 10,000 new cases of cervical cancer reported annually and about 30 percent of those are caused by virus strains the vaccine can’t touch. The best advice for women is to get a pap smear every year.

Scientists from the National Cancer Institute recently found that Carrageenan, an extract that comes from red algae, keeps HPV from entering cells in a lab dish. Lubricants like Oceanus’ Carrageenan  (http://www.oceanusbrands.com) have carrageenan and it can be safely used in conjunction with condoms.

Since the side effects of Gardisil are still not known, a natural approach like a carrageenan lubricant may be a safe alternative for sexually active women to reduce their risk of HPV.

Yours in good health,

Good Caffeine? You Bet!

Green tea is unique: it's made from pure, unfermented leaves that are harvested at their peak perfection and then stabilized through exposure to both humid and dry heat - giving green tea the highest concentration of polyphenols and locking in the tannins.

Tannins ensure that caffeine is taken to the brain in only small amounts so it can be easily used. This helps green tea drinkers improve their vitality and stamina without the up-and-down effect of black tea.

Tannins inhibit the oxidation of your body's DNA material, a leading cause of cell destruction and mutation.

Green tea tannins help clear urinary tract infections, stimulate digestion, reduce unwanted body fat, increase hair growth and support saliva secretion to keep teeth free of plaque.

Pretty amazing, don't you agree?

Folk Medicine is Now Proven Medical Fact

In 1980, Hiroyuki Sumi, M.D. a researcher of the Japan Ministry of Education at the blood laboratory of the University of Chicago, documented that natto did, indeed, possess unsurpassed powers to dissolve blood clots.

He was searching for a natural agent that could successfully dissolve blood clots associated with heart attacks and stroke.

Dr. Sumi found that the sticky part of nattokinase, (an enzyme found in fermented soybeans), commonly called “threads”, exhibited a strong blood clot busting activity. Here’s what happened...

Dear Reader,

In a 2005 study, 58 patients with an average age of 45 years, all suffering with chronic periodontitis were instructed either to consume two grapefruits per day for two weeks or to serve as a control group. Prior to treatment, the average vitamin C concentration found in their blood was significantly lower than in healthy adults. The amount of gingival bleeding improved significantly in the group eating grapefruit, but did not change in the control group.

These results suggest that regularly eating grapefruit can reduce gingival bleeding in patients with chronic periodontitis. This improvement may be due in part to the vitamin C content of grapefruit. However, studies using vitamin C alone to treat periodontal disease have produced conflicting results. Grapefruit also contains a number of different flavonoids, and previous research has shown that the combination of vitamin C and flavonoids is more effective than vitamin C alone in the treatment of periodontal disease. Grapefruit also contains an array of other nutrients and phytochemicals, some of which might enhance gingival health.

It is also important to know that grapefruit interacts with certain calcium channel blockers, lovastatin, cyclosporine, saquinavir, and other drugs. Most of these interactions with grapefruit can increase the toxicity of the medication. It is important, therefore, to question your doctor if you are taking medications before using grapefruit therapy to prevent chronic periodontitis.

Alternative Medicine Gains Popularity, Credibility by Judith Hood

Escalating health care costs and mounting concerns about the safety of prescription medications have prompted millions of Americans to turn to alternative medicine in recent years. Advocates of alternative medicine believe that alternative therapies can provide the public with valuable services that are not available through conventional medicine.

Complementary and alternative medicine generally refer to practices that aren't integral parts of conventional medicine. What is or isn't considered complementary and alternative medicine changes constantly as an increasing number of treatments undergo rigorous study.

Though the two terms are often grouped together, complementary medicine and alternative medicine aren't necessarily the same thing. Complementary treatments are often thought of as treatments used along with the conventional therapies your doctor may prescribe, such as using Tai Chi or massage in addition to prescription medicine for anxiety.

Alternative approaches are generally thought of as being used instead of conventional methods. For example, this might mean seeing a homeopath or naturopath instead of your regular doctor. Alternative practitioners believe that our bodies are remarkably resilient machines, capable, with some occasional prodding or intervention, of healing themselves.

Some alternative health practices have been incorporated into conventional health care delivery systems. Hundreds of integrated medical clinics have opened in recent years, usually under the direction of a medical doctor.

Although alternative medicine includes many systems of healing and every system has its own features and merits, there are some common features which differentiate this therapy from conventional medicine. Alternative medicine maintains that the health of a person includes the well-being of his physical, mental, social and spiritual planes whereas conventional medicine treats the body as a mechanical structure.

Last year the U.S. public spent an estimated $36 billion on alternative therapies. Of this amount between $12 billion and $20 billion was paid out of pocket for the services of alternative health care providers and approximately $5 billion was spent on nutritional and herbal supplements. Visits to Complementary and Alternative Medicine ( CAM ) practitioners went from 400 million to more than 600 million visits per year, and the amount spent on these practices rose from $14 billion to $27 billion. Over seventy-five medical schools have courses on Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

In response to the growing demand for alternative medicine, The National Institutes of Health created a special department to provide information to people who are considering alternative therapies. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine conducts research and offers information to the general public. The formation of the NCAM is a major step forward because conventional medical providers once refused to embrace the methods used in alternative medicine, dismissing it as hocus pocus.

Most complementary and alternative medicine practitioners base their work around a few common principles. Some of these are similar to what your conventional doctor might do, while others are quite different. Basic philosophies of complementary and alternative medicine include:
  • Your body heals itself. Complementary and alternative medicine practitioners see themselves as facilitators. To them your body does all the healing work, and you only need treatment to encourage your natural healing processes. Healing begins from within.
  • Prevention is key. Your complementary and alternative medicine practitioner may wish to see you before you get sick to make sure you're doing all you can to keep yourself healthy. Just as in conventional medicine, chronic conditions are easier to diagnose and treat when caught in the very early stages.
  • Learning and healing go hand-in-hand. Your complementary and alternative medicine practitioner views himself or herself as a teacher and mentor who offers guidance. To the practitioner, you're the one who does the healing.

You Need Protein to Grow and Heal!

You need protein every day, but… what kind of protein, that’s the question. Protein is essential for muscle growth, brain function and energy. Without it, you’ll drag, droop and drop before your time.

You need protein for the manufacture of hormones, antibodies, enzymes and tissue repair. And maybe most importantly, protein helps your body maintain the proper acid/alkaline balance in the body.

I spent over two years testing and tasting other people’s protein powders and I discovered three things that turned me off big time…

  • Turn off #1 All of them tasted bad!
  • Turn off #2 All of them were impossible to dissolve!
  • Turn off #3 All of the soy products were high in fat, carbs and sodium.

So, I set out to make a super high-energy protein drink...

Why does Alzheimer’s disease strike only 1% of India’s over-65 population vs. 10% of the American population?

UCLA research finds one reason may be that Indian food is rich in curry spices, especially turmeric, which contains the antioxidant curcumin. Daily low doses of curcumin slashed deposits of brain plaque, considered a hallmark of Alzheimer’s, by 50% in mice.

Probable Reason:
Curcumin is a strong anti-inflammatory, similar to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, also tied to fewer Alzheimer’s cases. But curcumin may be safer than NSAIDs in preventing Alzheimer’s, researchers concluded.

Is Folic Acid the Wonder Cure for Colon Cancer?
By Lisa Mondello

How many times have you heard someone say to eat your vegetables to stay healthy? Probably a thousand times. Never has there been more evidence that eating certain vegetables actually will do just that. Recent studies have shown that taking at least 400 micrograms per day of Folic Acid will actually reduce your risk of developing colon cancer, a disease that strikes 150,000 Americans each year.

What is Folic Acid?

In its natural form folic acid is known as folate, a water-soluble B vitamin that can be found in many of the healthy foods we eat. However, nearly 80% of all Americans have a folic acid deficiency because they don't eat right. Folic Acid, as it is known in its synthetic form, can be ingested by eating the right foods and taking supplemental vitamins. Here are some foods that are high in folic acid.

  • Spinach
  • Asparagus
  • Green Peas
  • Avocado
  • Lettuce
  • Wheat Germ
  • Egg Noodles
  • Whole Grain Bread
  • All types of Rice
  • Peanuts

There are many other foods that contain folic acid, but the above list is a good example of foods with a high enough amount of folate to make a difference in your daily diet. Unless you're counting your micrograms on the back of every package of food you buy in the supermarket, it will be hard to know if your diet consists of enough folate to keep you healthy.

Fortified Foods

Since a staggering number of Americans are deficient in folic acid, in 1998 the FDA mandated that certain foods such as cereal, whole grain bread and pasta be fortified with folic acid. Check the back of your cereal box for the amount of folic acid. You might be surprised that simply eating a bowl of cereal in the morning gives you half of your daily requirement of folic acid.

Folic Acid at Work

All this is well and good, but how does it prevent colon cancer? Folate is necessary for the creation, repair and function of DNA. When a person is deficient in folic acid, their bodies are susceptible to breaking down that DNA, leading to cancer.

A significant long-term study was conducted by Harvard Medical School that showed that taking folic acid supplements over a period of 15 years can greatly decrease the risk of women getting colon cancer by 75%. This is a number that is hard to ignore given the fact that approximately 50,000 people per year die of colon cancer.

How Much Folic Acid?

Taking 400 micrograms of folic acid over a period of 15 years or more gives you a greater chance of decreasing the risk of colon cancer than for those who'd only just started taking the supplement. However, even for people who have had pre-cancerous cells found through a routine colonoscopy, taking folic acid supplements by way of eating fortified foods or a daily vitamin can be beneficial in preventing more cells from degenerating into cancer cells. For people who have a family history of colon cancer, this is news to celebrate.

Toxicity

While the average adult requirement of folic acid is 400 micrograms per day, this is a case where too much of a good thing is not good. However, the risk of toxicity in taking folic acid is low, because any excess of this water-soluble vitamin is passed through the urine. Even so, while occasional high levels of folic acid will not hurt you, a normal healthy adult shouldn't take more than 1000 micrograms per day consistently. Long-term doses of too much folic acid can make you deficient in vitamin B12, which can lead to anemia and even nerve damage or dementia in the elderly.

Luckily, the benefits derived from taking folic acid supplements or ingesting folate naturally through foods can be obtained at the lower amount of 400 micrograms per day which is easily manageable with the right foods and taking a multi-vitamin daily.

Between taking a supplemental vitamin and eating a good diet of green leafy vegetables, dried beans and peas, nuts and whole grains, you shouldn't have to worry about whether or not you are getting enough folic acid in your diet to help prevent colon cancer. The key to the benefits of folic acid in preventing colon cancer is consistency over a long period of time. While taking folic acid is not a guarantee that you will never get colon cancer, research shows that it can significantly reduce your risk and should not be ignored.

The Length and Quality of Your Life Depends On How Well Your Liver Functions!

Impaired liver and gallbladder function has been linked to accelerated aging, weakened immune system and dozens of major illnesses and diseases including asthma, coronary heart disease, cancers, migraines, allergies, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, and kidney disease. When your liver can’t cleanse your blood, all the toxins you ingest and absorb are passed unchecked into your bloodstream where they poison your lungs, your skin, your kidneys, your reproductive organs, your bones, and every cell in your body!

Why? Because your liver is your body’s mastermind detoxifying agent and blood filter and your first and most powerful line of defense in a polluted world. (That’s why the traditional Chinese doctors call the liver “the general in the army,” and why the oldest healing systems on earth always clean the liver first!)

Magnets Offer Drug-Free Pain Relief
by Judith Hood

Every year millions of people turn to magnetic therapy as a drug-free alternative for dealing with chronic pain. The Magnetic Therapy Council describes magnetic therapy as a holistic approach used to relieve pain, restore energy and enhance sleep. Although magnetic therapy has been used for thousands of years, it has become increasingly popular in recent years. Magnets are believed to enable the body to naturally regain its self-healing electromagnetic balance.

Magnetic therapy utilizes the natural energy of magnetism that is important to human existence and overall health. A magnetic field provides a (natural) way to assist the (body's normal healing process) as it passes through all tissues and cells. Studies show that magnets can be an effective therapy for the relief of pain by blocking pain sensations. Applying magnetic fields to an injured area improves blood flow and oxygen to enhance the body's natural healing process. The improved blood flow and fluid exchange to the injured tissue helps reduce pain and inflammation.

A double-blind study conducted recently at Baylor College Of Medicine concluded that magnets can help reduce pain in post-operative patients. Health Week and Time magazine recently reported that champion golfers and other athletes find magnetic therapy helpful for sore joints and muscle aches. One estimate places America's spending on magnets to treat pain at $500 million per year. The world wide estimate is $5 billion.

The Office of Alternative Medicine of the National Institute of Health in Washington, D.C., has just awarded over a million dollar grant to the University of Virginia to study the effects of magnets in chronic pain. Prestigious centers such as John Hopkins and Massachusetts Institute of Technology are also studying magnetic therapy.

Many orthopedic journals have documented the effectiveness of magnet therapy in strengthening and healing of fractured bones. Ronald Lawrence, M.D., Ph.D, clinical professor at UCLA School Of Medicine and president of the American Association for the Study Of Pain, conducted a great deal of research on medical uses for magnets, and co-authored the book "Magnet Therapy, The Pain Cure Alternative". In the book he states, "The effective rate of pain relief is about 85 percent". He also states, "Magnets are completely free of side effects".

Magnetic bracelets, necklaces and earrings are sold at many pharmacies and health food stores. The magnetic earrings are reported to "stimulate nerve endings that are associated with head and neck pain" and the magnetic bracelets are said to "act upon the body's energy field" and "correct energy imbalances." Larger magnetic therapy items include seat cushions, pillows and mattress pads.

Some of the major advantages of magnetic therapy include:

     * It's a drug-free approach - The major advantage of this approach is that it is a drug-free way to relieve pain so you don't have to worry about the side effects of drugs. However, it is important that you report any change in drug use to your doctor.

     * It's a self-help therapy - This method puts you in control of the therapy. As you learn how your symptoms change and as you experiment with the magnetic treatment, you will be able to determine the best treatment regiment for your ailment.

    * It's portable and flexible - Magnetic devices can go where you go.

It's Estimated That By the Year 2010, Some 40% of Americans 65
or Older Will Have Diabetes

Despite regular reports in the national press about the near epidemic level of diabetes, people persist in thinking about diabetes as simply blood sugar levels that are a little high or low. No big deal! Wrong!

First and foremost, diabetes is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Why?

Because when you have rapidly rising and falling glucose levels, those extremes "destabilize" your heart.

The excess insulin produced by the pancreas to respond to the glucose spikes causes high blood pressure problems which further taxes the heart with oxidative stress. Which is why...

Testing the Power of Green Tea
by Rhonda L. Rundle

Human Trial Examines Whether Extract Can Kill Stubborn Leukemia Cells

Green tea has long been touted as a soothing tonic with medicinal powers. Now, those claims are being put to a test in treating chronic lymphocytic leukemia, or CLL, a blood cancer that is the most common form of leukemia in adults, especially men over age 50.

Researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., launched a human test in August to determine whether a green-tea extract can kill stubborn leukemia cells. The test is sponsored by the National Cancer Institute and, in an unusual step, partly funded by CLL patients eager to drive promising research out of laboratories and into doctors' offices. Natural products are particularly appealing to cancer patients looking for gentler alternatives to chemotherapy.

In 2004, Mayo researchers published test tube studies on a green-tea extract, epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG. In the lab, the extract reduced the level of certain proteins that seem to prolong the life of CLL cells. When the protein levels dropped, the bad cells died at a normal rate. As reports of those results spread, some CLL patients began drinking green tea and swallowing EGCG capsules sold in nutrition stores. "Many people sent their stories to us, telling us that after years of seeing cells get worse that they had noticed some improvements," says Tait Shanafelt, assistant professor of medicine and hematology at the Mayo Clinic. "Rarely do we see spontaneous improvements, but this looked like more than chance events," he added.

Dr. Shanafelt and his colleagues were encouraged by the anecdotal reports, but knew that controlled human tests would be needed to evaluate the extract's effectiveness. At about the same time, a patient advocacy and education organization run by a husband-and-wife duo in Arizona was scouting the horizon for potential new therapies.

"Our interest is in sponsoring trials of therapies that could be as effective but would never get tested because nobody stands to make any money" from it, says Chaya Venkat, president of the nonprofit organization, CLL Topics Inc. in Sedona, Ariz.

People often discover that they have CLL through a routine blood test and may be symptom-free for many years. They struggle with the decision about when to begin treatment. They don't want to disrupt a normal life by starting too soon, or let the cancer gain the upper hand by starting too late. While CLL can be fatal, many patients live to a ripe old age and die of unrelated causes.

Dr. Venkat, who has an interdisciplinary doctorate in chemistry and education from the University of Michigan, says that green-tea extract was "an obvious choice" for financial support. It is widely used in India and China, so its safety was "something we could pretty much take for granted," she says. The scientific case for it was strong enough to merit a human test. By contrast, she says, "there are lots of experimental drugs in alternate medicine that get hyped by word of mouth and I'm not a great fan of that."

Dr. Venkat and her husband, P.C. Venkat, started researching CLL after he was diagnosed with it in 2001. Dr. Venkat soon was answering questions in Internet chat rooms. When the conversations grew unwieldy, the retired couple decided to start a Web site. Mr. Venkat, a former commercial and investment banker, taught himself Web site programming code and CLLTopics.org was born in April 2003. Now, some 1,500 people visit the site daily, they say.

In December 2003, the organization sent an email to about 15 researchers who were working on CLL to solicit their interest in pursuing a clinical trial of EGCG. One researcher, hematologist Neil Kay at the Mayo Clinic, called the same evening and "we talked for two hours," she says. A lively email exchange followed. Those conversations ultimately led CLL Topics to select Dr. Kay's group for its "Project Alpha," with a grant of over $100,000.

The clinical trial began in August. In the first phase, 11 patients have been enrolled to determine the best dose. Participants are taking a capsule twice a day, formulated at the National Cancer Institute from green tea provided by a Japanese company. Later this year, the EGCG study will expand to evaluate the response rate. The subjects are in the early stages of disease, but if the therapy is effective, it could help patients whose disease has advanced. "We're also looking at it in experiments with traditional CLL treatments to see if it makes them work better," says Dr. Shanafelt.

Some of the Mayo Clinic's early research on EGCG was funded by Edson Spencer, a retired chief executive officer of Honeywell, Inc., the aviation and industrial products conglomerate. Mr. Spencer, diagnosed with CLL in 1999 and treated by Dr. Kay, says he considers himself cured. He says he has backed Dr. Kay's research because "I liked him and felt a debt of gratitude."

The EGCG clinical trial also has attracted financial support from the CLL Global Research Foundation, a nonprofit research organization in Texas. "The likelihood of getting the pharmaceutical industry involved in something like this is small," says Michael Keating, president of the foundation and a professor of medicine at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Dr. Keating has one of the largest CLL practices in the country.

Failing Eyesight is Not an Inevitable Part of Aging

Prevent general oxidation-damage to your vision

      * Improve your night vision
      * Improve the microcirculation of retinal tissue
      * Protect your eyes from harmful sunlight
      * Keep your eyesight sharp and clear forever!

What are the two biggest culprits behind eye problems? Oddly enough, sunlight and pollution.

Your eyes (and mine) enjoy almost no protection from the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. This bombardment of UV rays leads to free-radical damage responsible for the vast majority of vision problems.

Worse yet, because most of us live in or near cities, your eyes are overexposed to pollution and suffer from more free radical damage than any other organ in your body. Now for the really good news.

The latest medical research reveals you can combat and defeat this constant, ever increasing free radical assault on your eyes by feeding your body with high powered, targeted antioxidants.
