Safety First
Why Do Wino’s Outlive Their Physicians?
What Do Your Kidneys Really Do For You Every Day? |
|

Dear Reader,
There are many ways to help keep you and your loved ones safer. One
simple way to help improve safety is to use the "ICE", or the In Case
of Emergency contact system, where cell phone users store emergency
contact information in the phone directory of their cell phones. List the entry as "ICE" and enter the number of the person you would
want contacted in case of an emergency. This information can easily be
found in your cell phone by emergency personnel or by hospital
personnel.
Granted, this implies several things: that you have a cell phone, that
the phone was with you at the time and that the cell phone was not
damaged, that the information you provided was current, and that the
medical personnel were capable of retrieving it. But every little bit
of help counts if you or your loved one are in need. This contact
person may even be able to help the medical staff with your medical
history or your needs if necessary. Put ICE in your cell phone and
make it easier for emergency personnel to contact loved ones in case of
an emergency to get your medical history (are you allergic to any
drugs, do you have a history of heart disease, do you have a Do Not
Resuscitate order, etc.).
Make a new entry with the word "ICE" followed by the name of the
person you want called in emergency situations (examples: ICE-Dave,
ICE-Mom). For more than one contact name, you can even use ICE1-Dave,
ICE2-Mom or ICE1, ICE2, etc. Make sure that the people listed as your
ICE know that you have listed them in your phone and that they know
about your medical history. Everyone, especially people without cell
phones, should carry identification information with them, along with
emergency contacts and medical information in their wallet or purse.
Even some children and many teenagers have cell phones now days; so
this ICE information should be included in their cell phone address
books so that their parents or guardians can be reached quickly.
ICE, In Case of Emergency, is free, it's easy, and one day it could help save your life.
Another amazingly simple and helpful technique to foster greater
safety is called The File of Life. Did you know that more than 90% of
medical emergency calls are treated without knowledge of the patient's
medical history? Recently, local fire, police and EMS personnel are
reaching for what’s called The File of Life. This is a simple card
that helps responders to get quick, accurate and vital medical history
when a patient is unable to offer the information. The File of Life
card also helps to eliminate the risk of a patient forgetting to
mention something important. The File of Life could be a lifesaver
too, for people who live alone. The File of Life is becoming very
popular across the country with local fire, police and EMS departments,
and it is kept in a red plastic pocket labeled FILE OF LIFE, and the
entire file or pocket is held with a magnet to the outside of your
refrigerator. This information should include the
patient's name, emergency medical contact, insurance information,
details of any health problems, current medications and dosages, any
allergies, any recent surgeries, religion and a health care proxy.
So be assertive with your safety, and with the safety of the
people you love--make contact information and vital health information
readily available! It's easy, and better to do this, than wish you did.
Yours in good health,
Cindy Gray

Benjamin Franklin was a frequent visitor to France where they
appreciated his wit and charm with the ladies. Franklin observed that
the French seemed more robust, more alive, more healthy than their
American counterparts.
Yet Franklin also observed, the French kept late hours. They ate
dinner at nine. And they drank wine. And they preferred talking to
dancing. In other words, the French did everything WRONG for their
health which, I suppose, is what prompted Ben's question in the first
place.
What is it about red wine that links it to health when we normally
associate alcohol with excess sugar, weight gain, liver disease and
diabetes?
Based on research from doctors at several leading universities
including Harvard University, longevity scientists have pinpointed the
remarkable life extension nutrient found inside the red grape skin – Resveratrol.

What Do Your Kidneys Really Do For You Every Day?

It’s their critical job to filter blood (about 1700 quarts a day), ridding the body of waste products.
The kidneys filter metabolic waste products from protein, fat,
various minerals, alcohol, drugs, and other ingested toxins. Your
kidneys are your indispensable wastewater removal system.
Much of the water you drink is necessary to clean the blood and flush acid waste out of the body via the kidneys.
Your kidneys also regulate all your body’s water; electrolytes
monitor the acid/alkaline balance of your blood and help control blood
pressure. |

Long Winter’s Nap Eludes Millions Of Americans
Natural Power to Improve Health
Fix Your Digestion and Fix Your Health Joints & Muscles Free of Pain? |
|
|
Dear Reader,
While the possibility of a long winter’s nap sounds very soothing
during the fast-paced, stressful holiday season, the reality is that
millions of people struggle through the holidays deprived of restful, restorative sleep. The 80 million Americans who suffer from sleep
disorders find that their insomnia worsens during this hectic time of
the year. Jam-packed schedules, increased sugar intake, economic
stress and the desire to make “everything perfect” for your family can
negatively affect your ability to get the amount of sleep you need.
The inability to get a good night’s sleep is not something to be taken
lightly during the holidays or any other time. Insomnia has been linked
to major disasters like plane crashes, traffic fatalities and serious
work related injuries. According to The National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration, more than 100,000 serious automobile accidents a year
are caused by driver fatigue.
Lack of sleep can also lead to health problems, including obesity. A
study conducted at Columbia University found that people who sleep five
hours per night are 75% more likely to become obese than those getting
seven to nine nightly hours of sleep. People getting six hours of sleep
are 27% more likely to gain weight than people who get the recommended
amounts.
Because insomnia is so prevalent, prescription sleeping pills are
prescribed by the millions and most of them have negative side effects
such as sleepwalking and next-day drowsiness. They can also be habit
forming. That being the case, millions of Americans have chosen to
treat their insomnia with natural remedies.
One of the most popular natural supplements used by people with
sleep problems is melatonin. In fact, more than 20 million Americans
use melatonin supplements to help them sleep. Sometimes referred to as
an “all natural nightcap” melatonin is a natural body hormone produced
by the pineal gland (a pea-sized structure at the center of the brain).
Melatonin is believed to regulate the “circadian rhythms” in the body.
Many studies have supported the use of melatonin supplements in
shortening the time it takes to fall asleep and reducing the number of
times a person wakes up during the night.
Talk to your holistic practitioner about other natural ways to
improve the quality and quantity of your sleep. There are numerous
natural remedies that can help you get the rest your body needs to
function at peak performance so you can enjoy every single minute of
the holiday season. So fluff up your pillow, snuggle down under the
blanket and settle down for a much-deserved long winter’s nap. Sweet
dreams.

Fix Your Digestion and Fix Your Health

Your colon is a battlefield filled with “friendly” and
“unfriendly” bacteria. The friendly bacteria (also known as
probiotics) help you to assimilate nutrients. They also prevent the
attachment of “unfriendly” microflora, which can dilute the strength of
your immune system.
A wide range of both traditional and alternative health
professionals now agree that a continually replenished stronghold of
“friendly” bacteria is essential for a robust and worry-free digestive
system. Unfortunately, levels of “friendly” bacteria rapidly decline
with age.
Like no other probiotic formula on the market, VIBRANT FLORA 15/50™
replenishes your colon with the vital microflora to counteract toxic
pathogens that threaten your immune system and your colon’s equilibrium. |

‘Tis The Season To Be Merry: Or Blue?

How Can the Rooster Help Men and Women Keep Their Joints & Muscles Free of Pain? |

Dear Reader,
Children are laughing. Carolers are singing. The aroma of fresh baked
cookies wafts through your kitchen. Colorful lights are blinking
merrily on your tree. So why do you feel so sad? If you find yourself
feeling sad and blue during the holidays, you are not alone. Millions
of Americans suffer from holiday depression so profound that they are physically and mentally unable to participate in what is expected to be the happiest time of the year.
There are numerous factors that can cause us to feel stressed,
fatigued, lonely and sad during the holidays. Many people feel isolated
and sad because they don’t live in a Norman Rockwell ideal world. The
fact of the matter is that only about 25% of all Americans are living
in what is considered a “traditional” family. If loved ones are absent
during the holidays, if relationships are broken or if there have been
other types of tragedies, don’t pretend that the problems do not exist.
Denial takes more energy than talking openly about issues. Try to
emphasize the positive aspects of a relationship that has been lost or
allow yourself to put more energy into relationships that have survived.
For some people, the simple fact that the days are shorter and the
nights are longer can trigger depression. The holiday season transpires
during the time of year when there are fewer hours of daylight.
Research has shown that 10 percent of our population is significantly
affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Regardless of other
factors related to the holidays, people who suffer from this disorder
will experience chronic fatigue, difficulty sleeping, irritability and
feelings of sadness. Phototherapy, a treatment involving a few hours of
exposure to intense light, is effective in relieving depressive
symptoms in patients with SAD.
Financial constraints, particularly in today’s troubled economic
times, can cause anxiety, depression and a feeling of helplessness. The
majority of Americans spend between 95% and 100% of each paycheck. The
period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s brings about special costs
that increase debt. To avoid this, set reasonable limits regarding the | | |
