Dear Reader,
In a 2005 study, 58 patients with an average age of 45 years, all
suffering with chronic periodontitis were instructed either to consume
two grapefruits per day for two weeks or to serve as a control group.
Prior to treatment, the average vitamin C concentration found in their
blood was significantly lower than in healthy adults. The amount of
gingival bleeding improved significantly in the group eating
grapefruit, but did not change in the control group.
These results suggest that regularly eating grapefruit can reduce
gingival bleeding in patients with chronic periodontitis. This
improvement may be due in part to the vitamin C content of grapefruit.
However, studies using vitamin C alone to treat periodontal disease
have produced conflicting results. Grapefruit also contains a number of
different flavonoids, and previous research has shown that the
combination of vitamin C and flavonoids is more effective than vitamin
C alone in the treatment of periodontal disease. Grapefruit also
contains an array of other nutrients and phytochemicals, some of which
might enhance gingival health.
It is also important to know that grapefruit interacts with certain
calcium channel blockers, lovastatin, cyclosporine, saquinavir, and
other drugs. Most of these interactions with grapefruit can increase
the toxicity of the medication. It is important, therefore, to question
your doctor if you are taking medications before using grapefruit
therapy to prevent chronic periodontitis.
Yours in good health,

Can You Live-Better-Longer by Solving Gut Problems?
We all want to live-better-longer. But how?
In
the cover story of the November, 2005 issue of National Geographic
called The Secrets of Living Longer, Dan Buettner talks about three
groups of people who “produce a high rate of centenarians, suffer a
fraction of the diseases that commonly kill people in other parts of
the developed world, and enjoy more healthy years of life.”
In
case you haven’t read this life changing article, I’ll share it with
you now, then tell you about another group who also enjoy increased
longevity and wellness when no one else thinks it’s possible and how
you can too...
