Why does Alzheimer’s disease strike only 1% of India’s over-65 population vs. 10% of the American population?

UCLA research finds one reason may be that Indian food is rich in curry spices, especially turmeric, which contains the antioxidant curcumin. Daily low doses of curcumin slashed deposits of brain plaque, considered a hallmark of Alzheimer’s, by 50% in mice.

Probable Reason:
Curcumin is a strong anti-inflammatory, similar to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, also tied to fewer Alzheimer’s cases. But curcumin may be safer than NSAIDs in preventing Alzheimer’s, researchers concluded.

Less Toxins = Less Pain, More Energy

Medical studies reveal that each and every day we’re exposed to harmful substances, not only in the form of common air pollution, but through the very foods we eat. The Standard American Diet (or SAD for short!!) is loaded with preservatives, antibiotics, pesticides, and dangerous chemicals — all waiting to inundate your system, from your organs, to your bloodstream, from your head down to your toes, robbing you of the vibrant good health that you deserve.

But once these harmful substances are removed from your system, you’ll begin to look and feel
dramatically better...

Is Folic Acid the Wonder Cure for Colon Cancer?
By Lisa Mondello

How many times have you heard someone say to eat your vegetables to stay healthy? Probably a thousand times. Never has there been more evidence that eating certain vegetables actually will do just that. Recent studies have shown that taking at least 400 micrograms per day of Folic Acid will actually reduce your risk of developing colon cancer, a disease that strikes 150,000 Americans each year.

What is Folic Acid?

In its natural form folic acid is known as folate, a water-soluble B vitamin that can be found in many of the healthy foods we eat. However, nearly 80% of all Americans have a folic acid deficiency because they don't eat right. Folic Acid, as it is known in its synthetic form, can be ingested by eating the right foods and taking supplemental vitamins. Here are some foods that are high in folic acid.

  • Spinach
  • Asparagus
  • Green Peas
  • Avocado
  • Lettuce
  • Wheat Germ
  • Egg Noodles
  • Whole Grain Bread
  • All types of Rice
  • Peanuts

There are many other foods that contain folic acid, but the above list is a good example of foods with a high enough amount of folate to make a difference in your daily diet. Unless you're counting your micrograms on the back of every package of food you buy in the supermarket, it will be hard to know if your diet consists of enough folate to keep you healthy.

Fortified Foods

Since a staggering number of Americans are deficient in folic acid, in 1998 the FDA mandated that certain foods such as cereal, whole grain bread and pasta be fortified with folic acid. Check the back of your cereal box for the amount of folic acid. You might be surprised that simply eating a bowl of cereal in the morning gives you half of your daily requirement of folic acid.

Folic Acid at Work

All this is well and good, but how does it prevent colon cancer? Folate is necessary for the creation, repair and function of DNA. When a person is deficient in folic acid, their bodies are susceptible to breaking down that DNA, leading to cancer.

A significant long-term study was conducted by Harvard Medical School that showed that taking folic acid supplements over a period of 15 years can greatly decrease the risk of women getting colon cancer by 75%. This is a number that is hard to ignore given the fact that approximately 50,000 people per year die of colon cancer.

How Much Folic Acid?

Taking 400 micrograms of folic acid over a period of 15 years or more gives you a greater chance of decreasing the risk of colon cancer than for those who'd only just started taking the supplement. However, even for people who have had pre-cancerous cells found through a routine colonoscopy, taking folic acid supplements by way of eating fortified foods or a daily vitamin can be beneficial in preventing more cells from degenerating into cancer cells. For people who have a family history of colon cancer, this is news to celebrate.

Toxicity

While the average adult requirement of folic acid is 400 micrograms per day, this is a case where too much of a good thing is not good. However, the risk of toxicity in taking folic acid is low, because any excess of this water-soluble vitamin is passed through the urine. Even so, while occasional high levels of folic acid will not hurt you, a normal healthy adult shouldn't take more than 1000 micrograms per day consistently. Long-term doses of too much folic acid can make you deficient in vitamin B12, which can lead to anemia and even nerve damage or dementia in the elderly.

Luckily, the benefits derived from taking folic acid supplements or ingesting folate naturally through foods can be obtained at the lower amount of 400 micrograms per day which is easily manageable with the right foods and taking a multi-vitamin daily.

Between taking a supplemental vitamin and eating a good diet of green leafy vegetables, dried beans and peas, nuts and whole grains, you shouldn't have to worry about whether or not you are getting enough folic acid in your diet to help prevent colon cancer. The key to the benefits of folic acid in preventing colon cancer is consistency over a long period of time. While taking folic acid is not a guarantee that you will never get colon cancer, research shows that it can significantly reduce your risk and should not be ignored.

The Length and Quality of Your Life Depends On How Well Your Liver Functions!

Impaired liver and gallbladder function has been linked to accelerated aging, weakened immune system and dozens of major illnesses and diseases including asthma, coronary heart disease, cancers, migraines, allergies, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, and kidney disease. When your liver can’t cleanse your blood, all the toxins you ingest and absorb are passed unchecked into your bloodstream where they poison your lungs, your skin, your kidneys, your reproductive organs, your bones, and every cell in your body!

Why? Because your liver is your body’s mastermind detoxifying agent and blood filter and your first and most powerful line of defense in a polluted world. (That’s why the traditional Chinese doctors call the liver “the general in the army,” and why the oldest healing systems on earth always clean the liver first!)
